Unifying Randomness

For this piece of painting, the topic was Unifying randomness. My task was to unify three random words which are popcorn, ritual and chain. My first step to approach this task was to find the dictionary meaning of these words and to find any connections or contradictions that could possibly expressed in the artwork.

After much contemplation, I was able to draw out symbolic and abstract meanings of the three words and its connections. For the popcorn, instead of painting popcorn itself, I inferred it as a symbol of explosion. For chain, I inferred as the thing that is continuous and persistent and also deterrents. Lastly, fire for ritual.

Fire and explosion could be the connections for the ritual and popcorn while continuous and hindering characteristics for chain and ritual.

For the technique wise, after long ponderation, I thought of using broad tapes that paints doesn't soak in. First step was to randomly stick the tapes at each sides and paint with monochromatic colours. Second step was to take off the tapes and repeat it with increasing colour intensity.

After repeating few time, multiple chain-like straight lines that cross over each other were satisfactorily created. For the middle part, I tried to express the feeling of object that is about to expand and burst. I used impasto techniques to create sense of movements and to create contrast.

The lines are created multiple times as if to deter it from explosion. Not intended but the organic figure at the middle part and geometric lines at the side made good contradiction.
